A Message from Mayor Peter T. Imbert...
Welcome to the Village of Amityville's web site. We hope you find the site helpful in discovering much of what the Village of Amityville has to offer. Amityville, which means "Friendly Village", is a most "friendly village" in which to live and raise a family, to establish and grow a business or to experience a wonderful place in which to go beaching, boating, fishing, hunting or to enjoy local cultural facilities.
Amityville is known for its charming Victorian homes, its picturesque downtown and for its waterfront amenities. It was first settled in the 1600s but it was not until March 3rd 1894 that it became the Incorporated Village of Amityville. We owe a great deal of gratitude to our founding forefathers for their vision and wisdom and to the mayors and trustees that have followed in their footsteps of dedication and service to the community.
In its infancy the "friendly bay village", as it has come to be known, was primarily a farming community that had strong ties to the fishing and boating industries. Salt hay was an important agri-product that was grown to feed livestock. But the farms and marine industries slowly gave way to the needs of summer visitors in search of the comforts afforded by the cool breezes and beaches of the Great South Bay. Hotels, long since gone, supplanted the farms and marine industries that were located along the waterfront. The hordes of summer visitors that discovered early Amityville included stage and theater personalities, prominent members of society including businessmen, artists, writers and the so called "rich and famous" Manhattanites.
Now, more than 100 years into its incorporated life, the adaptability and the quaint heritage of Amityville continues. Local businesses and residents alike work together and take pride in the fact that Amityville, an early Long Island settlement, is one of the few remaining villages to boast of a healthy downtown with its own police, fire and public works departments as well as having its own independent court and justice system. In December 2008 we moved into our new Village Hall which is home to the village police department, village justice court and village administration. It is a "green" building which means it is a leader in energy efficiency design, referred to in the industry as "a qualified LEED building". The building has achieved LEED certification at the "gold" level. The building was designed to reduce energy consumption, minimize impact on the environment and increase the comfort, health and safety of the occupants. The village will realize a savings in the long run because the building uses 40-50 percent less energy than a conventional building. The facade of the building is in keeping with the village's traditional landscape.
Our official village flag was adopted in 2007. Its pennant shape symbolizes our nautical heritage. At the center of the flag is the official seal of the village. The seal and borders are in gold and the background is green. These colors are in keeping with our entranceway signs and are similar to the colors of the centennial flag created in 1994 by the Amityville Historical Society.
As the current mayor and a lifelong resident and businessman of Amityville, I encourage you to explore the site and take advantage of all its features. Since I first took office in 1997, the mission of village government has been to be more "user-friendly" by extending itself to new and established merchants, local industry, residents and visitors. To this end I say, come explore the friendly bay village and experience the pleasures and opportunities that abound.
If I may be of assistance please contact Village Hall at (631) 264-6000. We will help you, guide you and assist you in ways that you will find to be uncommonly friendly.
Sincerely,

Peter T. Imbert, Mayor
